Participants should be able to: identify distinct clinical entities which are currently included under the diagnostic label of ALS; identify leading hypotheses (genetic and biochemical) on pathogenesis of motor neuron disease; correlate selective disease presentations with (the possibility of) individual pathogenic mechanisms; and appreciate the controversy of "lumping versus splitting" the spectrum of motor neuron disease.
