Acupuncture has seen an increase in popularity in the US, including among patients with neurologic conditions. This talk is an introduction to acupuncture's conceptual framework and the major ways in which it differs from western physiologic paradigms. Modern acupuncture has been influenced by allopathic medicine in ways which have lead to standardization of acupuncture points and techniques. Various theories exist about acupuncture's mechanism of action such as the fascia theory, endorphin theory, immune effect theory, central theory, placebo, structural theory. This talk will offer a critical overview of the evidence for each theory, with an emphasis on the central and peripheral nervous system.
