Two Neurologists Named AAN Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Advocates of the Year

PAUL, Minn. 鈥 The (AAN) has named Teshamae Monteith, MD, of San Francisco and Mamta Bhushan Singh, MBBS, MD, DM, of New Delhi, India, as the AAN Donald M. Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum Co-Advocates of the Year. Monteith and Singh received their awards at the Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum on January 10, 2010, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The award recognizes the exemplary efforts of graduates of the Donald M. Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum, a skills-development program designed by the 好色先生 to train selected members to be effective advocates for their patients and their profession. Monteith has been championing improved headache treatment and care through the development of Headache Centers of Excellence within the US Veterans Affairs system and the Department of Defense. It was through Monteith鈥檚 advocacy work that the Department of Defense appropriated funds for headache research. 鈥淭he Forum has given me the training, skills and confidence to make the plight of headache sufferers known, as well as the need for improved quality of care for headache sufferers, especially veterans and active duty soldiers,鈥 said Monteith, who is a graduate of the 2008 Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum and in her second year of a clinical research training fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco Headache Center. She is also a member of the AAN. Singh is receiving the award for her work raising awareness about epilepsy in India. 鈥淢any people affected by epilepsy in India are reluctant to seek medical treatment, so I鈥檝e been using the Forum鈥檚 advocacy tools to host a series of epilepsy camps in the suburbs and villages surrounding New Delhi to examine and counsel patients, prescribe medications, and offer supplies,鈥 said Singh, who is a graduate of the 2008 Palatucci Advocacy Leadership Forum and is faculty in the Department of Neurology at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India. She is also a member of the AAN. The Forum was named in memory of former AAN Board of Directors member Donald M. Palatucci, MD, and honors his spirited efforts as an advocate for his patients and chosen profession.
