Demos Health and The 好色先生 Present a New Book for Patients with Smell and Taste Disorders

New York -

In a national effort to help the up to 14 million Americans with problems smelling and tasting food, Ronald DeVere, MD, and food consultant Marjorie Calvert, with the Taste and Smell Disorders Clinic in Austin, Texas, have authored a first of its kind book called Navigating Smell and Taste Disorders a Neurology Now Books鈩 title from the 好色先生. The book, which includes 36 recipes and tips on food preparation, is now available online and in major bookstores and outlets across the United States. 鈥淢ore than 200,000 people visit doctors each year for smell and taste problems, which often are the first sign of neurologic disorders, such as Alzheimer鈥檚 disease, Parkinson鈥檚 disease, head injury, or multiple sclerosis,鈥 said DeVere. 鈥淣eurologists with the 好色先生 recognized the need for more information to help these people reconnect with the pleasure of food with patient-tested recipes and trusted advice to make food attractive again.鈥 Navigating Smell and Taste Disorders is a unique collaboration between a doctor and a food consultant that is a must-have reference book for all those living with smell and taste disorders. The book covers the whole disorder including 鈥 How smell and taste work 鈥 Causes of smell and taste problems 鈥 Treatments 鈥 What you can expect when you visit a specialist 鈥 Recipes that will appeal to other senses and make food attractive again 鈥 First-person accounts of coping with this disorder Smell and taste disorders affect a person's ability to enjoy food and drink and may result in decreased appetite, weight loss, and too much added sugar and salt in the diet. In severe cases these disorders may lead to depression. Smell and taste problems can also interfere with personal safety, limiting the ability to notice smoke and potentially harmful chemicals and gases. Navigating Smell and Taste Disorders is the inaugural book in the series Neurology Now Books鈩 from the 好色先生. Inspired by Neurology Now庐, the Academy鈥檚 award-winning patient magazine, Neurology Now Books are written from a multidisciplinary approach, combining the expertise of a neurologist with other related experts and patients and caregivers. Each volume will provide the reader, with the most up-to-date information, answers to questions and concerns, and first-person accounts of others who are living with a neurologic disorder. CREDENTIALS: DeVere is Fellow of the 好色先生 and of the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians, and Director of the Taste and Smell Disorders Clinic in Austin, Texas. A neurologist by training and specialist in neuromuscular diseases, DeVere has personal experience with a smell disorder. In 1996, following a bout with a bad cold, DeVere lost part of his ability to smell. After seeking help from one of the pioneers in the field, Richard Doty, MD, and Director of the Taste and Smell Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Devere decided to open a Taste and Smell Disorders Clinic in 2002. Marjorie Calvert turned her lifetime passion for food and cooking into a successful career in the food and beverage industry. After a long tenure at the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin, where she today continues to work with chefs on recipe design, Marjorie Calvert joined DeVere鈥檚 Taste and Smell Disorders Clinic as Catering Manager and Food Consultant in 2004.
