Learning Objectives
Sponsored by the Palliative Care Section. Collaborating sections include Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, and Headache and Facial Pain. Integrative medicine brings complementary approaches to care (eg: nutritional, psychological, physical) together with conventional (eg: Western medicine) treatments, with an emphasis on multimodal interventions, or combinations of complementary and/or conventional approaches. In a 2012 national survey, more than 30% of American adults and about 12% of children used health care approaches that were not part of conventional medical care or that had origins outside of usual Western practice. Since that time, interest in these therapies has only grown, for both patients and clinicians. The integrative medicine approach of treating the whole person can be particularly important for patients with complex neurologic disease accompanied by high symptom burden. This Section Showcase will discuss how integrative therapies can offer symptom relief and also provide practical tips on how they can be incorporated into clinical practice. https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/complementary-alternative-or-integrative-health-whats-in-a-name
