Leadership Webinars Aimed at Chief Residents to Debut in 2025
January 3, 2025
Neurology chief residents face a variety of unique challenges in their roles. These include curricular development, scheduling, networking, and participating in the recruitment process of new residents. Each of these tasks demands different skills that are not typically taught in formal training before assuming the chief resident position. To address these challenges, the AAN is launching a webinar series designed specifically for neurology chief residents.
“Identifying resources that can help chief residents embark on this fascinating last year of their training while still fulfilling their clinical duties is essential to guarantee a high-quality training environment in different programs nationwide,” said Jorge Patino, MD, a fourth-year neurology resident at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston and chair of the AAN’s Consortium of Neurology Residents and Fellows (CNRF).
The new series will be available for free to all chief resident members of the AAN, regardless of their training site, and will cover various essential topics throughout the year, including communication skills, cultural competency, advocacy, feedback, self-promotion, recruitment, and navigating difficult situations. Some webinars will offer interactive peer-to-peer discussion time so participants can talk about topics and challenges with other chief residents.
“The idea for the series originated as an initiative from the CNRF, in collaboration with experts Elina Zakin, MD, FAAN; Arielle Kurzweil, MD, FAAN; and Nada Abou-Fayssal, MD,” explained Patino. “Their combined expertise has created a far-reaching and comprehensive program to train future chief residents while creating a strong network to promote collaboration and exchange of ideas during the chief residency year and beyond.”
