Plan of care or referral for possible medication overuse headache

Quality of Patient Care = Patients Who Meet Criterion / (Eligible Population - Exclusions)

Measure Purpose: Increase treatment of medication overuse headache (MOH), improve quality of life, decrease headache-related disability, decrease direct and indirect costs, and increase appropriate treatment for MOH

The numerator: Patients who had a medication overuse headache plan of care* created or who were referred for this purpose

is divided by

The denominator: All patients with a diagnosis of medication overuse headache within the past three months or who screened positive for possible medication overuse headache 

Exclusions are removed from the denominator for:

  • Patient already has an active plan of care in place

Measure Calculation Example

Dr. Roy has 50 patients with a diagnosis of medication overuse headache during January 1 to December 31 of the measurement year. This is the denominator. No patients had a plan of care in place.

Of the 50 patients, 18 had a medication overuse headache plan of care initiated. This is the numerator.

Quality of care = 18/(50-0). Dr. Roy has a score of 36% for this measure.
