Venous Thromboembolism Events (VTE) following primary brain tumor surgery

Quality of Patient Care = Patients Who Meet Criterion / (Eligible Population - Exclusions)

Measure purpose: Reduce the number of VTE following primary brain tumor surgery.

The numerator: Patients who experience a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or Pulmonary Embolism (PE) event during their immediate post-surgical hospitalization, identified on diagnostic testing performed

is divided by

The denominator: all patients who had resection or biopsy of grade III-IV glioma.
Exclusion is removed from the denominator: DVT or PE present at admission. This measure is an inverse measure meaning a lower score indicates better quality.

Key Phrases

Examples of key phrases you could use to meet the measure include:

  • DVT present at admission
  • PE present at admission

Measure Calculation Example

Dr. Jones has 100 patients between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2018, that received a resection or biopsy of their grade III-IV glioma. This is the denominator. Two patients had a DVT or PE documented at admission and meeting exclusion criteria.

Five patients experienced a VTE following their resection or biopsy. This is the numerator.

Quality of patient care = 5/(100-2). Dr. Jones has a score of 5% for this measure.
