What to Expect – Program Overview

The Women Leading in Neurology Program will kick off in person January 30–February 1, 2025, continue with in-person programming April 3-5, 2025, and an in-person program graduation September 11-13, 2025. The AAN covers all program-related expenses for the selected participants.

  • Rotating Learning Partners Cohort: Bi-monthly focus sessions with learning partners from the class.
  • Coaching: Monthly one-on-one coaching sessions with a consultant.
  • Mentoring: Mentorship with a seasoned member of the AAN that includes regular touchpoints.
  • Three Face-to-Face Meetings: Participation and attendance at the January/February 2025 kickoff; 2025 Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA; and concluding with graduation at the AAN Board of Directors meeting in September 2025 in Washington, DC.
  • Assessment & Prereading: Pre-assessment designed to help understand the strengths of different professional and communication styles.
  • 90-minute Content Sessions: Five virtual sessions throughout the program focusing on the competencies required to ascend as a leader in the organization; mindful leadership and cultivating emotional intelligence; finding and using your voice during collaboration and conflict; and understanding strategy, creating alignment, and strategic career positioning.
  • Group Leadership Learning Circles: Monthly facilitated interactive and engaging forums that provide in-depth exploration of current issues and trends that impact leaders and their organizations.
  • Webinars: Two virtual sessions offering an opportunity to learn from diverse leaders and mentors in the field.   
  • Engagement with AAN: Learn about the governance, committees, mission/vision, and engage with leadership.
  • Alumni Community: Engage with others in our exclusive leadership alumni community.

Time Commitment Note: Participants are required to attend all leadership meetings, coaching calls, content sessions, small group calls and webinars. Please plan to spend between 4-6 hours a month on group, mentor and coaching calls, and reflection work as a part of the program. Please do not apply for this program if you are unable to invest this time.


How to Apply – Eligibility and Application Requirements

Eligibility

An eligible applicant must be a certified neurologist and an active AAN member residing in the United States.*

  • Applicant must also be seven or more years out of residency

Application Requirements

Eligible AAN members interested in participating in the program should submit the following documents in PDF format, in addition to your responses to the essay questions, as part of the application process:

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of Recommendation

Grading Rubric

  • Leadership Potential (Weight = 40%)
  • Self-awareness and understanding of leadership (Weight = 40%)
  • Alignment with program and leadership developmental needs (Weight = 30%)

Selection

Preference will be given to applicants who have not completed any of the intensive AAN Leadership Programs. We consider the diversity and experience of the whole cohort beyond individual attributes to provide the best learning environment.
