The AAN offers many opportunities to get involved, including participating on a committee or subcommittee. As a volunteer leader for the AAN, you will help advance the field of neurology and make lifelong connections with your fellow leaders. 

The AAN is a mission-driven organization, led by its vision and strategic goals, and operating within its unique set of values. Committees and subcommittees are the core of the AAN, reflecting our commitment to community in action. The collaborative efforts of our volunteer leaders enable the AAN to drive programs, products, and services that advance our strategic goals and align with our mission and vision.

Academy Committees

 

*Rosters reflect the current term and will be updated in the spring of each odd-numbered year. 

What is an Academy Committee?

A committee is a group of persons convened for an indefinite period to accomplish a core Academy purpose.

  • All committees report directly to the Board of Directors.
  • Committees usually have five to seventeen members.
  • Committees typically have two face-to-face meetings each year and several virtual meetings each year. 

What is an Academy Subcommittee?

A subcommittee is a group of persons convened for an indefinite period to accomplish a specific committee purpose.

  • All subcommittees report to their parent committee.
  • Subcommittees usually have five to fifteen members.
  • Subcommittees typically have one face-to-face meeting and several virtual meetings each year. 

Apply to Serve on an AAN Committee or Subcommittee

If you are interested in serving on an AAN committee or subcommittee for the next applicable term, you must complete an and ensure your disclosure form is up-to-date (see below).

Volunteer Leader Expectations

All AAN volunteer leaders are required to uphold established governance norms and comply with the Academy’s organizational policies. A summary of key Academy policies is available. 

Volunteer leaders also agree to adhere to the following inclusive leadership commitments:

  • Awareness: Strive to understand personal bias and develop systems to mitigate its impact.
  • Importance: Embrace the necessity of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for the AAN and our profession. Accept that the pursuit of DEI is not a destination, but a journey with bumps along the way. Share both successes and challenges with others.
  • Courage: Demonstrate inclusive leadership and adhere to guiding principles of the AAN's Position Statement on DEI. Act when needed to hold others in the organization accountable.
  • Collaboration: Support and promote collaboration among diverse individuals across the AAN.
  • Respect: Acknowledge differences as a strength and champion inclusive language and actions in all relevant proceedings and practices.
